Concerned about acne marks during GLP-1 treatment? Ask what kind of mark needs attention.

Separate flat color from scar texture

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says flat pigmented spots after acne are usually not scars. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation often fades with time. A dermatologist can assess discoloration that bothers you. [1]

Describe the shape you notice

AAD describes ice pick scars as small but deep, rolling scars as wide and shallow, and boxcar scars as round or oval depressions. Raised scars also occur. These descriptions give you vocabulary for a visit, not a diagnosis from a mirror. [1]

Discuss current breakouts before scar procedures

AAD says scar treatment typically follows control of active acne. Tell your dermatologist about every acne treatment used in the past two years: certain medicines can affect the safety of some scar treatments. [2]

Let the examination guide the choice

The consultation assesses scar types and locations. A plan considers age, skin tone and budget; different scars may need different treatments. Depressed scars may require a combination, while raised scars need a different approach. Discuss your expected appearance and available downtime before deciding. [2]
