New dents in your nails deserve a diagnosis before a cosmetic fix.

Ask about nail psoriasis

Tiny pits can occur with nail psoriasis, including without visible skin psoriasis. Other signs include crumbling, discoloration and buildup beneath a nail. Tell a dermatologist about changes. Nail changes can also signal psoriatic arthritis. If infection is suspected, clippings or scrapings may go to a laboratory. This does not make every pitted nail psoriasis. [1]

Discuss coverage after diagnosis

For diagnosed nail psoriasis, AAD allows polish and gentle buffing to disguise dents, but advises against artificial nails because they can increase separation risk. Keep nails short, leave cuticles alone and avoid scraping beneath them. Wear vinyl or nitrile gloves for wet chores. Moisturize after washing with a thick cream or ointment. [2]

Set a follow-up date

Treatment depends on the findings. Nail psoriasis medicines can require at least six months of application; follow the dermatologist's directions rather than selecting a medicine from a manicure photograph. [1]
