Read all the labels

Selenium can appear in multivitamins and other supplements. The Supplement Facts panel gives the amount in each product. [1]

Distinguish a limit from a goal

NIH lists 55 micrograms daily for adults, with different pregnancy and breastfeeding needs. The US adult upper limit is 400 micrograms from food, drinks and supplements combined; the European Food Safety Authority's adult limit is 255 micrograms. These are not hair-growth doses. [1]

Ask what needs treatment

AAD says hair-loss treatment begins with finding the cause. Suspected deficiency may warrant blood testing. Its supplement guidance warns that high amounts of one nutrient can lead to excessive intake. [2]

These US sources do not establish selenium as prevention or treatment for GLP-1 shedding. For a separate supplement concern, see our biotin and blood-test guide.
