Considering cosmetic surgery after weight loss? Put your GLP-1 prescription into the preparation conversation before the procedure date.

Share the medication list early

ASA's patient guidance advises telling the surgical team and anesthesiologist about every medicine and supplement, including GLP-1 medicines combined with GIP activity. It says most patients can continue their GLP-1 before surgery, but the anesthesiologist, surgeon and prescriber should decide the plan together. [2]

For the cosmetic consultation, ask whether the proposed procedure uses general anesthesia or deep sedation. Ask who will coordinate those instructions with your prescriber. Do not infer the anesthesia type from a clinic's description of the procedure as minor.

Report dose changes and stomach symptoms

ASA's multi-society guidance identifies early treatment with increasing doses, higher doses, significant gastrointestinal symptoms and other conditions that slow stomach emptying as factors the team should assess. Tell them about nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or constipation before an elective procedure. [3]

Get your instructions in writing

Depending on risk, the team may recommend a liquid-only diet for 24 hours, change the anesthesia plan, assess stomach contents with ultrasound or postpone the procedure. These are clinician-directed options, not a universal preparation schedule. Ask for the exact eating, drinking and medication instructions for your appointment. [3]

A warning does not supply a hold interval

The Zepbound label says evidence is insufficient to determine whether changing fasting instructions or temporarily stopping it reduces retained stomach contents. This warning does not provide a personal stop-and-restart schedule or a complication rate. [1]
