Scalp flakes during treatment deserve their own assessment.

Read the bottle

AAD lists zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, sulfur, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole and coal tar as dandruff-shampoo ingredients. Lather on the scalp. Some products need 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing; follow your bottle’s directions. [1]

Match use to hair texture

AAD gives twice-weekly dandruff shampoo as an example for fine or straight hair or an oily scalp. For coarse, curly or coily hair, it suggests about weekly, if tolerated, with washing as needed. With curls or coils, apply to the scalp only because treatment ingredients can dry the hair. [1]

When flakes persist

Scaly patches with hair loss or broken hairs can indicate scalp ringworm, which needs prescription antifungal medicine. AAD also describes psoriasis among conditions that can resemble dandruff. Ask for assessment rather than selecting another bottle by appearance alone. [2]

Write down your routine

Bring the bottle or a label photograph. Note when you used it, how long you left it on and what you noticed afterward. Include the styling products you use between washes.
