If dark marks appear during GLP-1 treatment, review your skin products without assuming the medication caused them.

Check the tinted-sunscreen ingredients

AAD recommends tinted sunscreen with iron oxide for visible-light protection, plus SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum protection and water resistance. Iron oxide appears in the inactive ingredient list. [1]

Discuss the cause and fading time

Once the cause is found and stopped, AAD says marks a few shades darker than your skin often fade in six to twelve months; deeper discoloration can take years. This is not a GLP-1 recovery deadline. [1]

Read the treatment label

In the US, FDA says skin-lightening products with hydroquinone are not approved for over-the-counter sale, while prescription hydroquinone products are available through a healthcare provider. Mercury is banned in skin-lightening products. [2]

FDA advises against purchasing OTC lighteners with either ingredient. Mercury may be listed as calomel, mercurous chloride, mercuric, mercurio or Hg. Some illegal products omit these ingredients from their labels, so a label check does not guarantee safety. [2]

Its advice is to consult a healthcare provider about treatment options. Bring the product packaging and explain which areas changed and whether application burns or stings. [2]
