A mouth that feels sticky through the day or needs repeated sips during meals deserves attention at your dental visit. If this starts during GLP-1 treatment, bring the timing and your medication list. The aim is to explain the dryness and protect your teeth, alongside any plans for whitening or other cosmetic dental work.

Bring the full medication list

NIDCR says persistent dry mouth is not a normal part of aging. Several medicines and conditions can contribute, including treatments for blood pressure, depression and bladder problems, and conditions such as diabetes or Sjögren's disease. A dentist or doctor reviews the history and may request blood tests or a saliva-production test. [1]

List prescriptions, nonprescription medicines and supplements, with start dates and recent changes. Include the GLP-1 product and dose. Record whether dryness predates treatment, appears mainly overnight or persists during meals. Do not change a prescription on your own; ask the prescriber to review any suspected medication contribution.

Ask for a written fluoride plan

ADA's dry-mouth guidance recommends gentle brushing at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and daily flossing. It also lists prescription-strength fluoride products and professionally applied fluoride among preventive options. Ask which, if any, fits your decay risk. [2]

US nonprescription fluoride toothpastes generally contain 1,000 to 1,500 parts per million fluoride, according to ADA. Self-applied toothpaste, mouthrinse and gel are different delivery forms from professional varnish. [3]

Bring a photograph of your toothpaste and mouthrinse labels. If a prescription product is added, ask whether it replaces an existing step, how much to use and how often. Keep the actual instructions with the tube. A shopping list that says only “stronger fluoride” leaves too much unspecified.

Distinguish temporary moisture from treatment of the cause

ADA explains that saliva substitutes can provide temporary symptom relief but do not cure dry mouth. Its Seal of Acceptance category for dry-mouth relief concerns temporary relief when the product is used as directed. [2]

For daily comfort, NIDCR suggests sipping water or a sugarless drink with meals, chewing sugarless gum to stimulate saliva and using a humidifier at night. Tobacco and alcohol can worsen dryness. [1]

Compare the job of each product in your routine. A moisturizing spray may help your mouth feel more comfortable; your fluoride regimen addresses decay prevention. Ask the dental team which products serve each purpose instead of assuming a pleasant mouthfeel means the teeth are protected.

Review what you reach for between meals

The National Institute on Aging advises avoiding soft drinks and acidic fruit juices when managing dry mouth. It suggests water or sugarless drinks, and sugarless gum or candy, and recommends discussing artificial saliva with a dentist or doctor. [4]

Write down what you sip or suck on repeatedly, including the product names. Show the labels at the visit, particularly if you use a lozenge throughout the day. Also mention cracked lips, burning, sores, trouble swallowing or difficulty eating; NIDCR includes these among symptoms that can accompany dry mouth. [1]

These US resources describe dry-mouth assessment and care; they do not establish that a GLP-1 medicine caused your symptoms. For related dental planning, read whitening consultation questions. If vomiting is part of the history, bring that up too and review dental care after vomiting.
