If loose abdominal or upper-arm skin bothers you after weight loss, a surgical consultation should assess readiness as well as shape.

Bring your weight history

That candidacy page does not specify one waiting interval for everyone. Bring dated weights and your current treatment plan. Ask how the surgeon will judge stability and coordinate with your GLP-1 prescriber. A date on the calendar alone does not establish readiness. [1]

Discuss eating difficulties before surgery

A review in the September 2026 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery addresses nutrition after substantial weight loss, including GLP-1 use and sleeve gastrectomy. It recommends individualized protein and calorie planning and correction of micronutrient deficiencies around body-contouring surgery. [2]

This is a clinical review, not a randomized trial establishing a diet that prevents complications. Tell the team if appetite changes or food intolerance make eating difficult. Ask who will assess your intake and whether you need a dietitian before scheduling. [2]

Map the incision locations

ASPS says visible scars accompany body contouring and another operation may be necessary. Ask where incisions would lie for your proposed procedure, what clothing would cover them and whether one operation could address your goals. Results are not guaranteed. [3]

Ask about your complication risks

ASPS lists blood clots, infection, poor wound healing, skin loss and altered sensation among possible complications. Ask how your medical history affects those risks and what follow-up the proposed operation requires. [4]

These US professional sources do not establish a GLP-1-specific surgical recovery timetable. For a separate preparation question, read our GLP-1 and anesthesia planning guide.

This article provides general education, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan. Medication information refers to US sources. Discuss medication, nutrition and cosmetic treatment decisions with qualified clinicians.
