A lifting or discolored nail during treatment deserves an assessment.

Report a new dark streak

AAD advises a skin-cancer check for a new or changing dark nail streak. Not every streak is melanoma, but one can be. Do not treat a color change as merely a polish problem. [1]

Ask whether a sample is needed

For suspected fungus, a dermatologist may examine nail clippings, scrapings or material from beneath the nail under a microscope. Nail injury and psoriasis can resemble fungal infection. [2]

Discuss polish and expectations

AAD says to ask your dermatologist whether polish is suitable during fungal treatment. Treatment aims to clear infection and restore the nail when possible; slow nail growth means that treatment takes time. [2]
