Considering abdominal surgery after GLP-1 weight loss? Use these questions to organize a consultation.
1. What can surgery change?
A tummy tuck removes excess abdominal skin and fat and, in most cases, repairs weakened or separated muscles. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) says it does not replace weight loss or exercise. Stretch marks outside the skin being removed remain a separate concern. [1]
2. Is this the right time?
ASPS describes candidates as physically healthy, at a stable weight and nonsmokers. Its overview advises postponement when substantial weight loss or future pregnancy is planned. Bring your weight history and plans to the surgeon rather than choosing a date from someone else's recovery story. [1] [2]
3. Where would the incisions go?
For a full tummy tuck, ASPS describes a horizontal incision between the pubic hairline and belly button. Its length and shape depend on excess skin; another incision around the navel may be needed for upper-abdominal skin. Ask the surgeon to explain the proposed route on your own abdomen. [3]
4. Which complications need discussion?
ASPS lists poor wound healing, infection, fluid accumulation, persistent pain, altered sensation, unfavorable scars and possible revision. It also lists deep vein thrombosis and cardiac or pulmonary complications. This is not the entire list. Ask which risks apply to your health history before consenting. [4]
5. What care would I need afterward?
Dressings, a compression garment and temporary drains may be used. ASPS advises obtaining instructions about wound and drain care, concerning symptoms and follow-up. Ask specifically about bathing, garment duration and returning to exercise. Write down the team's answers rather than borrowing a fixed recovery timetable. [5]
